Gallagher Taps Hughes From EY as Tax Specialist in Private Equity and M&A Practice
Gallagher has announced the appointment of Tom Hughes, a specialist corporate M&A tax adviser, as the new director of Tax Insurance within its EMEA-wide Private Equity and M&A (PEMA) practice. Hughes is set to join Gallagher on January 5, 2026, in the UK, further enhancing the firm’s commitment to expanding its specialist risk expertise.
This strategic move comes as Gallagher aims to broaden its range of client-focused solutions for businesses involved in acquisitions, mergers, and various transactional corporate activities. Hughes brings with him a wealth of experience from his previous role at EY, where he spent five years as part of the Corporate M&A tax team. His most recent position was as a senior manager in the International Tax & Transaction Services team, where he specialized in M&A.
A chartered accountant by profession, Hughes has dedicated the last decade to tax advisory services. He will report directly to Giles Hambly, head of Tax Insurance in the UK. Hughes possesses a comprehensive understanding of the entire deal process, including due diligence, acquisitions, disposals, and tax structuring. His extensive experience includes providing tax advisory services to private equity-backed portfolios, mid-market and fast-growth groups, as well as multinational corporations.
Over the past year, Gallagher has made several strategic hires across Europe to build a robust team capable of supporting clients engaged in M&A activities. This includes those operating within the private capital sector and those executing a broader range of corporate transactions. In addition to Hughes, Gallagher recently appointed tax specialist Cristina Montserrat Chaparro Vaquero as a senior broker and Pau Lopez Fornons as an associate broker to support clients across Iberia. Prior to these appointments, Joyce Koch and Vera Dembski were brought on board as M&A tax insurance broking specialists, focusing on clients in Benelux and Germany, all of whom have extensive backgrounds in “Big Four” firms.
“The UK tax insurance market has grown significantly over the past five years, driven by high levels of M&A activity, company restructuring, portfolio recapitalization, and increasing complexity and risk in the broader tax environment,” remarked Steve Jones, CEO of Private Equity & Transactional Risks in the UK.
