FAA Alerts Travelers to Anticipate Significant Airport Delays This Holiday Season

Travelers are bracing for significant delays as airports prepare for an influx of millions of passengers during the holiday weekend. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued at least eight separate airspace flow restrictions, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

This series of airspace flow programs (AFPs) is expected to impact major airports across the United States and Canada during one of the busiest travel days of the year. Some delays could extend beyond six hours, creating a challenging situation for holiday travelers.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the FAA for further details. To mitigate overcrowding, especially with hundreds of flights heading in similar directions, the FAA is reducing the number of planes permitted to take off and enter specific busy airspace sections.

According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), over 122 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home during the 13-day year-end holiday period, which runs from December 20 to January 1. “People are eager to travel this holiday season,” stated Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA. “That’s leading to record numbers on the roads and in the skies.”

Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami are the top three domestic destinations for holiday travelers this year, as reported by AAA. Internationally, Cancun, Mexico, and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic are the most sought-after getaways.

Winter weather has also contributed to flight delays, with over 5,500 U.S. flights delayed and more than 1,400 canceled by 3:40 p.m. ET, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware.
