Severe ‘Bomb Cyclone’ Causes Widespread Power Outages Across Northern US
A winter storm has swept through the Northern United States, including New York, bringing intense winds and rapidly falling temperatures. This severe weather event has left over 200,000 customers without electricity.
According to Scott Kleebauer, a meteorologist at the Weather Prediction Center, this weather phenomenon is referred to as a “bomb cyclone” due to significant drops in air pressure affecting the Great Lakes region. “The vast majority of the power outages are from those strong winds,” Kleebauer explained. He also noted that the rapid decrease in temperatures can lead to blackouts, as wet power lines may freeze.
As of approximately 4 p.m. local time, around 95,000 homes and businesses in Michigan were without power, as reported by Poweroutage.us. New York faced nearly 60,000 outages, while Pennsylvania reported about 43,000 outages.
This holiday season has been marked by extreme weather, disrupting travel and posing threats to infrastructure across the United States. Severe rains have caused flash floods in Southern California, and more than 1,700 flights were canceled as the winter storm impacted New York.
