Zurich Partners with Players Health to Revolutionize Injury Insurance in the NIL Era of College Sports

Zurich North America has partnered with Players Health, a leading provider of athlete safety and insurance solutions, to launch an innovative Critical Injury Protection Insurance solution. This new offering is specifically designed for colleges, universities, collectives, and their student-athletes who receive name, image, and likeness (NIL) payments.
This groundbreaking insurance product aims to safeguard the financial investments that institutions make in their top student-athletes. In the unfortunate event that an athlete suffers a season-disrupting injury, this policy provides essential coverage.
The Critical Injury Protection Insurance policy covers the college or collective for NIL contract payments that are made or owed to an athlete who sustains an injury during official play, practice, or training. If the injury results in the athlete missing a significant portion of the season—typically defined as 40% or more—the policy kicks in to protect the institution’s financial interests.
As the NIL landscape continues to evolve at a rapid pace, this surplus-lines coverage is customizable and can be tailored to reflect the specific value of NIL contracts. Additionally, another version of the offering can provide coverage for athletes against potential loss of future NIL-related income due to injury.
Underwritten by Zurich, this policy is distributed exclusively through Players Health. The collaboration has also led to a new integration with Teamworks, the Operating System for Sports™. Teamworks is widely used in college athletics, serving 99% of Division I athletic departments and over 6,500 elite sports teams globally.
Beyond just insurance, the partnership between Zurich and Players Health offers valuable insights into injury and sports risk. These insights are derived from Players Health’s extensive database, which is one of the largest of its kind in the industry.
Founded over a decade ago by a former college football player, Players Health was established with the mission to enhance athlete safety. The team, which includes many former college and professional athletes, has been diligently tracking injury data since the company’s inception. They have developed an injury probability model and utilized their data to advise organizations nationwide on how to better support athlete safety and mitigate risks.
