On Monday, President Donald Trump proposed a striking measure: a 200% tariff on French wines and champagnes. This suggestion came in response to French President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to decline an invitation to join the Board of Peace, an initiative aimed at addressing the ongoing Gaza conflict in the Middle East.
Trump stated, “What I’ll do is if they feel… hostile, I’ll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes. And he’ll join. But, he doesn’t have to join,” highlighting his unconventional approach to international diplomacy.
According to a report from Politico, Macron’s office confirmed that the French president had rejected Trump’s invitation. The statement indicated that the panel’s charter “goes beyond the framework of Gaza and raises serious questions, in particular with respect to the principles and structure of the United Nations, which cannot be called into question.”

In contrast, other nations, including Israel, have accepted the opportunity to join the Board of Peace. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his acceptance of Trump’s invitation, stating that he will become a member of the board, which aims to include world leaders.

Additionally, Trump has extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to join the board. This move has drawn criticism from various political figures, including Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md. Hoyer condemned Trump’s actions, stating in a post on X that “extending an invitation to Putin to join the Board of Peace undermines the mission to eradicate Hamas, secure peace, and promote reconciliation amongst nations.”

Hoyer further criticized Trump, asserting that “Trump’s refusal to hold Putin accountable is not only disgraceful, but also dangerous. His continued efforts to appease and partner with this craven dictator is a betrayal of freedom, democracy, and international law.”
