AXA XL Unveils Innovative Alternative Risk Solutions with Bouteille at the Helm

AXA XL has recently unveiled a dedicated Alternative Risk Solutions (ARS) team, appointing Sylvain Bouteillé, the current Chief Underwriting Officer for specialty, as its leader. This strategic move aims to centralize AXA XL’s alternative risk expertise, enhancing the company’s ability to deliver innovative and efficient alternative risk transfer solutions across the US, Canada, and Bermuda.

The ARS team will operate within AXA XL’s large commercial business segment, initially focusing on captive solutions. This includes structured risk solutions, which will be spearheaded by Austin Su. Additionally, Joseph Davina will lead the group captives segment. The ARS will also incorporate single cell parent captives, with plans to expand its capabilities in the future.

Collaboration will be key for the ARS team, as they will work closely with Steve Bauman, who heads the captive programs on AXA XL’s Client Broker Management team. This partnership is expected to enhance the overall effectiveness of the solutions offered to clients.

“As the cost of risk continues to rise, more businesses are seeking alternative risk solutions to flexibly and effectively manage their exposures,” stated Donna Nadeau, head of large commercial. “For our clients, this means access to more customized, cost-effective options that can help them navigate the rising costs of risk and build resilience against future uncertainties.”

Bouteillé will retain his responsibilities as CUO, specialty in the Americas. He joined AXA XL in August 2025, bringing over 30 years of industry experience, with a strong focus on credit risk, multinational programs, and strategic leadership. His extensive background positions him well to lead the new ARS team effectively.
