Hot Sauce Brand Takes Legal Action Against Manufacturer for Exploding Bottles
A product liability dispute is brewing between a well-known salsa and hot sauce company and its manufacturer.
Iowa-based Lola’s Fine Sauces has filed a lawsuit claiming it suffered losses amounting to several hundred thousand dollars after customers reported that its bottled products were bubbling, exploding, and fermenting after purchase. Lola’s asserts that its manufacturer, EcoIdeas, initially promised to take remedial actions, including filing an insurance claim, but is now claiming it lacks insurance coverage.
The lawsuit was filed in December in an Iowa district court and has since been transferred to the U.S. District Court of Southern Iowa.
Lola’s products are available nationwide at major retailers, including Target and Walmart.
According to Lola’s, the company entered into an agreement with the Canadian-based EcoIdeas to manufacture mini bottles of its hot sauces for distribution to retailers. As part of this agreement, EcoIdeas was to indemnify and hold Lola’s harmless against all damages, losses, costs, and expenses arising from any defects.
In 2024, Walmart removed defective Lola’s products from its shelves due to improperly packaged and labeled bottles, resulting in a billback of nearly $155,000 for Lola’s, as alleged in the lawsuit.
By 2025, Lola’s began receiving numerous complaints from customers about its bottles bubbling, exploding, and fermenting, with reports of discolored sauce in several bottles.
The company estimates its out-of-pocket damages to be approximately $525,000.
Lola’s claims it sent EcoIdeas a written notice regarding these issues, to which EcoIdeas acknowledged its breach of contract. However, after initially indicating that it would take responsibility, EcoIdeas has reportedly become unresponsive.
“EcoIdeas is now claiming it has no insurance coverage, and it still has not provided information to Lola’s about the issues to allow Lola’s to pursue any type of insurance claim,” the lawsuit states.
In a counterclaim, EcoIdeas has denied any liability to Lola’s for the damages incurred. The manufacturer argues that any attempts by Lola’s to introduce the issue of insurance coverage into the case are irrelevant and inadmissible.
EcoIdeas is seeking a jury trial to resolve the matter.
The case is officially titled Lola’s Fine Sauces Inc. v. EcoIdeas Innovation Inc., S.D. Iowa, 4:26-cv-00021, filed on 1/9/26.
