Successful TDI Investigations Secure $50 Million for Victims of Fraud
The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) Fraud Unit recently announced a significant achievement in the fight against insurance fraud, reporting a remarkable $50.9 million in court-ordered restitution for the fiscal year 2025. This accomplishment underscores the ongoing efforts to combat fraudulent activities within the insurance sector.
Over 20 dedicated TDI investigators have been actively working across the state, delving into a total of 314 cases of insurance fraud. The department highlighted that these investigations involved meticulous examination of financial records, as well as interviews with both suspects and victims. Once the investigations were complete, the cases were forwarded to TDI attorneys for prosecution.
In many instances, the courts responded decisively, imposing penalties on the fraudsters that included prison sentences, hefty fines, and restitution payments to the victims. One notable case involved former Houston insurance agent Mark Davis Lunsford, who was sentenced to prison time, fined $10,000, and ordered to pay restitution. Lunsford was accused of selling fraudulent insurance policies and embezzling over $318,000 in premiums from his clients.
