In a recent earnings call, Chipotle CEO Scott Boatwright revealed a strategic shift aimed at targeting customers with higher incomes. According to leaked audio, Boatwright indicated that the company plans to focus on customers earning over $100,000 annually, which may lead to further price increases.
Boatwright noted that approximately 60% of Chipotle’s core customers fall into this income bracket. He expressed a desire to “lean into that group in a more meaningful way” to enhance transaction performance throughout the year. “We learned that 60% of our core users have an average household income exceeding $100,000,” he stated, as reported by Yahoo Finance.

Boatwright elaborated on the demographic of Chipotle’s customers, stating, “What we’ve learned is the guest skews younger, a little higher income, is typically a digital native, and that their grounded purpose aligns with our North Star as a brand, around clean food, clean ingredients, high protein.” He emphasized that Chipotle is positioned to meet the dining preferences of this consumer group.
In response to growing demand for healthier options, Chipotle has introduced a new high protein menu. This initiative aligns with the increasing consumer interest in “clean” food and high-protein offerings.
Chief Financial Officer Adam Rymer also addressed the potential for price increases, stating that consumers should expect menu prices to rise by 1-2% due to escalating food and labor costs.

Boatwright later sought to clarify the “misinformation” surrounding the chain’s pricing controversy. He reassured stakeholders that “60% of our consumers’ average household income is over $100,000 a year, and they’re still spending in this tough economy.”
He emphasized that Chipotle intends to “lean into those consumers with brand innovation, menu innovation and really give them more compelling reasons to come in.” Chipotle spokesperson Laurie Schalow also stated that “pricing was never mentioned” in relation to the $100,000 income cohort.

Boatwright’s comments highlight a strategic pivot for Chipotle, aiming to cater to a more affluent customer base. “CEO Scott Boatwright stated on Chipotle’s earnings call last week that 60% of its customers have an average household income over $100,000, so the company sees an opportunity to lean into these customers with new occasions like group or solo dining experiences,” a representative noted. This demographic is currently spending more at restaurants, prompting Chipotle to enhance its marketing and menu innovations to attract them.
Schalow emphasized that “pricing was never mentioned regarding this consumer cohort,” and noted that Chipotle’s price increases have been modest, averaging around 0.7% compared to the industry average of 4%.
