Beacon Mutual CEO Spero Announces Retirement in 2027; Vitale Appointed as Successor

Beacon Mutual Insurance Co., based in Rhode Island, has announced that President and Chief Executive Officer Brian J. Spero will retire on March 31, 2027, after more than 18 years of dedicated service to the company.

In a significant leadership transition, Amy C. Vitale, Esq., currently the executive vice president and chief legal officer, will be promoted to president effective April 1, 2026. Spero will remain as CEO during a one-year transition period, ensuring a seamless handover of responsibilities to Vitale on April 1, 2027.

Spero joined Beacon in 2008 and took on the role of president and CEO in 2017. Before this, he served as the chief operating officer and general counsel, bringing a wealth of experience to the leadership team.

Under Spero’s leadership, Beacon has experienced remarkable achievements, including unprecedented profitability, surplus growth, and increased policyholder dividends. He also played a pivotal role in the company’s expansion into Massachusetts and Connecticut, further solidifying Beacon’s presence in the region.

“I am deeply grateful for our team’s dedication, engagement, and commitment to values. It has been an honor to serve alongside such talented individuals,” Spero remarked in the announcement.

He emphasized, “The strength of Beacon has always been its people; their commitment, their care, and the way they show up for each other and our policyholders. While I will greatly miss my colleagues, it is the right time to transition leadership to the next generation as Beacon continues its growth across New England.”

With 29 years of legal practice under his belt, Spero was also a founding partner of Partridge Snow & Hahn LLP. He holds degrees from Colgate University and Boston College Law School, which have equipped him with the knowledge and skills necessary for his leadership role.

Amy Vitale, who will take over as president, currently oversees Beacon’s legal department and provides guidance on corporate, regulatory, and legal matters as chief legal officer. Before joining Beacon, she practiced law at Partridge Snow & Hahn LLP, bringing valuable experience to her new role. Vitale earned her degrees from Providence College and The George Washington University School of Law.

For over 30 years, Beacon Mutual has been a trusted local workers’ compensation insurance provider, committed to serving the needs of its policyholders and the community.
