Storm Aftermath: 2,000+ Flights Canceled and 380,000 Homes Left Powerless

U.S. airlines faced significant disruptions on Tuesday, canceling over 2,000 flights as a powerful winter storm continued to impact airports across the Northeast. Fortunately, the storm was expected to ease by the evening, although strong winds were predicted to persist into the early hours of the morning.

As of 6:00 a.m. ET on Tuesday, data from FlightAware indicated that more than 2,000 flights had been canceled, with an additional 600 experiencing delays. This was a marked improvement compared to Monday, when nearly 6,000 flights were canceled, alongside approximately 4,000 delays.

The National Weather Service reported that the storm was anticipated to move away from the region on Tuesday, but warned that strong winds could continue throughout the morning hours.

Among the major airlines, JetBlue Airways experienced the highest number of cancellations, with nearly 41% of its scheduled flights scrapped for Tuesday, according to FlightAware data.

FACTBOX-More than 380,000 customers without power as winter storm hits US Northeast

REUTERS — The winter storm affecting parts of the U.S. Northeast has left over 380,000 homes and businesses without power. Officials across the region have issued warnings about heavy snowfall, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions.

The hardest-hit utility was Eversource Energy in Massachusetts, where 229,847 of its 3.3 million customers were without power. National Grid followed closely, with more than 23,000 customers affected; this utility serves around 3.1 million customers across the U.S.

“Heavy snow, wind gusts exceeding 70 mph, and near-zero visibility continue to create hazardous conditions across Massachusetts. Until the weather improves, our crews are limited in what they can safely accomplish,” National Grid stated in a post on X on Monday.

The total number of power outages in Massachusetts alone stands at 253,279, making travel along the East Coast particularly challenging. Airlines have canceled thousands of flights, and officials are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

Here are the major outages by state:
