Alabama Dentist Faces Insurance Fraud Charges Following 2025 Office Explosion

In March 2025, a shocking incident unfolded in Evergreen, Alabama, when a well-known dentist’s office exploded near the Florida line. This event has left the community in disbelief and raised numerous questions about the circumstances surrounding the explosion.

Dr. Douglas P. O’Connor, the owner of the dental practice, is now facing serious legal troubles. Described by many as a “very successful” and “very nice guy,” O’Connor has been charged with arson and insurance fraud related to the explosion and subsequent fire.

According to the arrest warrant filed in District Court in Conecuh County, Dr. O’Connor, who will turn 56 in February, “did knowingly and unlawfully commit the crime of insurance fraud by knowingly and with intent to defraud, conceal material information” presented to his property insurance company. The warrant indicates that O’Connor intentionally damaged the building located on Hillcrest Drive by starting a fire.

The investigation, which took 10 months, was confirmed by the state Fire Marshal’s Office through a social media post. O’Connor turned himself in on a Friday and is currently being held in the Conecuh County Jail.

As of now, fire officials have not provided further comments, and details regarding the alleged arson and fraud, including the identity of the insurance carrier, remain unclear. Robert Bozeman III, publisher and editor of the Evergreen Courant, noted that “the building literally exploded,” and fire investigators quickly deemed the fire suspicious. O’Connor, who resides in Troy, Alabama—approximately 75 miles away—was reportedly near his office at the time of the explosion. He suffered burns and drove himself to the hospital in his Tesla.

Bozeman, who has known O’Connor since he purchased the dental practice years ago, expressed surprise at the allegations. “It was a very successful practice. That’s what blew my mind,” he remarked, reflecting on the community’s shock at the news of O’Connor’s arrest.

While court documents did not specify a motive for the alleged fraud, Bozeman speculated, “Maybe he just got overloaded. Something like that usually involves money.” The dental office was strategically located next to an Alabama State Troopers office and a liquor store, not far from Interstate 65. A worker at the liquor store confirmed that the fire occurred around 9:30 p.m. and did not damage their establishment. Bozeman also mentioned that video footage of the blast might be available from nearby offices.

According to the Fire Marshal’s office, there were 14 arson-related arrests in Alabama in both 2023 and 2024, highlighting the seriousness of such incidents in the state.
