Bill Ackman Supports ICE Agent Linked to Controversial Fatal Shooting Donation

Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman recently issued a detailed statement on X, defending his decision to donate to a fund supporting the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer involved in the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Ackman clarified that his donation was not intended as a political statement. He initially attempted to contribute to a GoFundMe for Good but found it had closed after reaching its fundraising goal.

In his statement, Ackman condemned those who labeled his donation as “rewarding the murderer of Renee Good,” asserting that such characterizations were merely attempts to “generate clicks.”

“My purpose in supporting [the officer] and attempting to support Good was not to make a political statement,” Ackman stated. “I was simply continuing my longstanding commitment to assisting those accused of crimes in providing for their defense. I firmly believe that only a thorough forensic investigation by experts and a comprehensive understanding of the applicable law will determine whether [the officer] is guilty of murder.”

After making the donation, Ackman faced significant backlash, which even affected his corporate associations. Chipotle publicly distanced itself from him after social media users mistakenly claimed he owned the restaurant chain.

In response to a viral post calling for a boycott, Chipotle clarified on Threads that “Bill Ackman is not affiliated with Chipotle.” This statement came after Ackman donated $10,000 to the officer’s defense fund, leading to confusion about his ties to the company.

Ackman’s hedge fund, Pershing Square Capital Management, had previously disclosed a 9.9% stake in Chipotle in 2016. He played an active role in reshaping the company’s strategy before gradually reducing his stake and fully exiting by late last year, as revealed during Chipotle’s November earnings call.

In his post, Ackman elaborated on his motivations for donating to the officer’s fund and his efforts to support Good’s family. He recounted a personal experience from twenty-three years ago when he was wrongfully accused of a crime. Despite being confident in his innocence, he faced public scrutiny and was under investigation for nearly a year before being exonerated.

Ackman emphasized the importance of the presumption of innocence in the American legal system. “I am a fierce advocate for the principle that one is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a judge or jury,” he stated. He lamented the current societal tendency to abandon this principle based on the accused’s identity or political affiliation.

The GoFundMe campaign for the officer has raised over $705,900 in just five days, with Ackman’s contribution being among the largest.
