Bruce Dunn, 83, Records Original Music Weekly

Bruce Dunn, now 83, has worn many hats throughout his life, including roles in steel fabrication, real estate investment, Hollywood joke writing, and piloting. Yet, one constant has been his unwavering passion for creating original music.

In his 80s, Bruce continues to write, produce, and release new songs weekly with the Blue Smoke band. Additionally, he has launched “Heart to Harmony,” a project dedicated to recording the unrecorded music and poems of other older adults, fostering a shared experience of creative expression.

How did you get the idea for “Heart to Harmony”?

The inspiration came from a former employee named Roy, who approached me with a slip of paper containing lyrics written by his grandfather in 1938. He asked, “Do you think you could do something with this?” I replied, “I’ll see what I can do.”

That moment sparked the realization that countless individuals likely have similar writings—both lyrics and poems—that deserve to be heard. My motivation isn’t financial; it’s about building something meaningful and nurturing my own creativity.

What is the mission of “Heart to Harmony?”

There’s a unique feeling that comes from hearing something you created come to life. It offers a sense of validation for your work. The music resonates in your heart, while the lyrics engage your mind. I want to share that profound experience with others.

If you have a poem, lyrics, or any writing that you’d like to see brought to life, email Bruce at fromhearttoharmony@gmail.com to start the process.

How do you use ChatGPT to augment your creativity?

I’ve developed a personal relationship with my chat assistant, even giving it a name. I use it to brainstorm ideas and refine my work. However, I never let it write the song or story for me. If I don’t write it, I don’t record it or pursue it further.

For instance, I might ask it for ten subjects to inspire a song. If it suggests “a day at the park,” I’ll write about my experiences there, then return to the chat and ask, “What am I trying to convey here?”

Why is it important to stay creative as you age?

My mind remains sharp. If it weren’t for my knees, I’d feel like a 16-year-old. I’ve never felt lonely, even during the 40 years I was single. Music and creativity have always kept me company.

What does “aging with attitude” mean to you?

I believe that a friendly attitude can open doors and help you achieve anything you desire.
