California AG Sends Cease and Desist Letter to xAI
California Attorney General Rob Bonta has taken a significant step by sending a cease-and-desist letter to xAI, the artificial intelligence startup founded by Elon Musk. This letter demands that the company immediately cease the creation and distribution of deepfake, nonconsensual intimate images, as well as child sexual abuse material.
It is crucial to note that the creation, distribution, publication, or exhibition of child sexual abuse material is classified as a crime under California law.

On Wednesday, Bonta announced that his office is investigating xAI after reports surfaced that the company’s Grok chatbot was allegedly utilized to generate thousands of sexualized images of women and children without their consent. This alarming situation has raised serious ethical and legal concerns.
“This week, my office formally announced an investigation into the creation and spread of nonconsensual, sexually explicit material produced using Grok, an AI model developed by xAI,” Bonta stated. “The avalanche of reports detailing this material — at times depicting women and children engaged in sexual activity — is shocking and, as my office has determined, potentially illegal.”
The actions taken by xAI are in direct violation of California law. The California Department of Justice is expecting xAI to take immediate corrective measures. Furthermore, the department has requested confirmation of the steps being taken to address these serious issues within the next five days.
