California Light Bulb Manufacturer Faces $100K Penalty for Terminating Pregnant Employee

A California lightbulb manufacturer is facing significant repercussions after settling a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit for $100,000. This case highlights the ongoing challenges surrounding workplace discrimination and the importance of adhering to federal laws designed to protect employees.

Feit Electric Inc., a prominent lightbulb manufacturer located in Los Angeles, has agreed to pay $100,000 as part of a settlement with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The lawsuit stemmed from allegations that a female employee, assigned to work at Feit Electric’s warehouse in Pico Rivera, California, was terminated due to her pregnancy. This action is a clear violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which explicitly prohibits discrimination based on pregnancy.

The EEOC took legal action after initial attempts to reach a pre-litigation settlement failed. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, underscoring the seriousness of the allegations and the EEOC’s commitment to enforcing anti-discrimination laws.

This settlement is part of a larger resolution involving Eastridge Workforce Solutions, the staffing agency that assigned the employee to Feit Electric. Eastridge has also entered into a separate consent decree with the EEOC, agreeing to pay $185,000 and implement injunctive relief measures. When combined, these settlements amount to a total of $285,000, reflecting the gravity of the situation and the need for accountability in the workplace.

As part of the three-year consent decree resolving this case, Feit Electric is required to take several important steps beyond the financial settlement. The company must retain an equal employment opportunity monitor to oversee compliance with anti-discrimination laws. Additionally, Feit Electric is mandated to revise its discrimination policies to explicitly acknowledge various pregnancy-related accommodations. This proactive approach aims to foster a more inclusive and supportive work environment for all employees.
