Chile Faces Catastrophe: Deadly Fires Prompt Widespread Evacuations

Chilean President Gabriel Boric has declared a state of catastrophe in two southern regions of the country due to devastating wildfires that have claimed at least 15 lives and forced tens of thousands to evacuate their homes.

In a post on X, Boric emphasized that “all resources are available” to combat the wildfires, which have primarily affected the regions of Ñuble and Biobío. This declaration enables the Chilean government to mobilize emergency relief efforts to assist those impacted by the fires.

According to Security Minister Luis Cordero, the wildfires have resulted in the tragic loss of at least 15 lives in the Biobío region. The situation has escalated, with approximately 50,000 individuals evacuated from over 24 active fires reported across the nation. Interior Minister Álvaro Elizalde provided updates during a livestreamed press conference, highlighting that the majority of these fires are concentrated in the southern regions of Ñuble and Biobío.

Elizalde also warned that the weather forecast for the upcoming days is concerning. “The conditions are not favorable,” he stated, noting that extreme temperatures are expected, which will complicate efforts to control the wildfires. The combination of high heat and dry conditions poses significant challenges for firefighting teams working tirelessly to contain the blazes.
