China’s Nio Issues Unprecedented Recall of 246,229 Vehicles Due to Software Glitch

In a significant move, China’s Nio has announced a recall of 246,229 vehicles due to a software issue that poses safety hazards. This recall marks the largest undertaken by a homegrown electric vehicle manufacturer in the country.
The affected models include the ES8, ES6, and EC6, all of which were produced between March 16, 2018, and January 16, 2023. According to a statement released by the State Administration for Market Regulation on Monday, the software issue could potentially cause a brief blackout of the instrument cluster and central control screen, raising concerns about driver safety.
This massive recall is particularly noteworthy as it represents approximately three-quarters of Nio’s projected sales volume for 2025. It surpasses a previous recall by Xiaomi in September, when the tech giant issued a software update for over 115,000 of its popular SU7 electric sedans to address potential safety issues related to assisted driving features.
To address the situation, Nio plans to implement remote software updates for the affected vehicles. In cases where remote updates are not feasible, the company will carry out the necessary upgrades through its service centers. This proactive approach aims to ensure the safety and satisfaction of Nio’s customers.
In a related development, another Chinese electric vehicle brand, Zeekr, has also announced a recall of 38,277 vehicles due to safety hazards associated with power batteries. This highlights the ongoing challenges faced by electric vehicle manufacturers in ensuring the safety and reliability of their products.
