Chipotle Separates from Bill Ackman Following Donation to ICE Agent

Chipotle has taken steps to distance itself from billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, following his donation to a fundraiser supporting the ICE agent involved in the fatal shooting of a Minneapolis woman. The fast-casual restaurant chain, known for its burritos, tacos, and bowls, issued a statement on the social media platform Threads, clarifying that “Bill Ackman is not affiliated with Chipotle.”

This clarification came in response to a viral post on Threads that inaccurately claimed Ackman owned Chipotle and called for a boycott, stating, “Don’t eat at Chipotle. The guy who owns it just gave $10,000 to the man who killed Renee Good.”

Ackman’s hedge fund, Pershing Square Capital Management, had disclosed a 9.9% stake in Chipotle back in 2016. He played an active role in revamping the company’s strategy but gradually reduced his holdings, eventually exiting the stake late last year, as noted during a November earnings call.

The controversy surrounding Ackman and Chipotle arose after visitors to a GoFundMe page for the ICE officer involved in the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good discovered a $10,000 donation made by William Ackman. Following speculation about the identity of the donor, Ackman confirmed via social media that he made the donation, explaining he intended to contribute to a fundraiser for Good but was unable to do so in time.

“The whole situation is a tragedy. An officer doing his best to do his job, and a protester who likely did not intend to kill the officer but whose actions in a split second led to her death. Our country is stronger if we work together to solve complex issues that are tearing us apart,” Ackman stated.

The tragic shooting incident in Minneapolis has ignited protests not only in the Twin Cities but across the nation, prompting the Department of Homeland Security to announce the deployment of hundreds more ICE agents to the area.

DHS claims that Good “weaponized her vehicle” and “attempted to run a law enforcement officer over,” while critics argue that the ICE agent should face prosecution for his involvement in the shooting.
