Derek Jeter will always be the captain — but this weekend, he takes on a different role.

Jeter, renowned as the captain of the New York Yankees for the last 12 seasons of his illustrious 20-year career, has now been appointed as the captain of a padel team at the Reserve Cup in Miami.

The Reserve Cup, established by Wayne Boich, is an annual tournament where top padel players compete. Jeter is set to face off against NBA All-Star Jimmy Butler.

“I’m here to support Wayne. I’m no padel expert; he’s the expert. He first shared his vision with me, and I’m proud of what he’s built here,” Jeter remarked in an interview with Fox Business.

The inaugural Reserve Cup took place just two years ago, attracting stars like Jeter, David Beckham, and Serena Williams, all of whom have embraced this exciting sport that blends elements of tennis, pickleball, racquetball, and squash. The event boasts a prize pool of around $600,000 and over $2 million in sponsorship revenue.

“My love for the sport began in 2013 when I played at a wedding. I was amazed by how fun it was. Initially, I had no idea what padel was, but after playing with some ex-tennis pros in Miami, I realized how engaging it could be. Back then, there were fewer than ten courts in the entire U.S., with three in Miami. After playing with professionals in Spain, I understood how thrilling it is to watch live,” Boich shared with Fox Business.

Boich began inviting professional players to Miami and even constructed a court at his residence, transforming it into a vibrant event.

“Padel is engaging and accessible, allowing people of all ages to enjoy it. I noticed how individuals as old as 75 could get hooked after just one session. That was quite revealing,” Boich noted.

“What we have with the Reserve Cup isn’t just a tour event; it’s a high-end lifestyle gathering where attendees enjoy great padel alongside networking opportunities and various on-site activities,” Boich elaborated. “I feel humbled and proud to witness so many people embracing the game and the role we play in it.”

The Reserve Cup is no mere exhibition; it features some of the best players in the world competing for significant prizes.

“The presence of top players is what draws people in. Just like the World Series and Super Bowl, fans want to see the best,” Jeter added. “Wayne has turned this into an event that attracts elite players.”

For Boich, having the support of a 14-time All-Star and five-time World Series champion means everything.

“I’m fortunate to have been around sports for a long time, and these individuals have been friends of mine for years. They both enjoy padel, and I’m grateful for their support,” Boich expressed. “The corporate interest in the Reserve Cup is growing, and we have secured excellent sponsors to ensure the event’s success. We’ve contributed to about 20% of the courts sold in the U.S., and this is just the beginning.”
