Early Payment of Social Security SSI Benefits Due to Weekend Calendar Quirk

Some Social Security beneficiaries will receive their monthly benefits slightly earlier than usual in February and March due to a quirk in the calendar.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) typically disburses payments for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) on the first day of each month. The SSI program provides monthly payments to eligible older adults with little or no income, as well as to disabled individuals, differing from Social Security’s standard retirement benefits.

When the first of the month falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, SSI payments are made on the last business day of the preceding month. This ensures beneficiaries receive their funds before the new month begins, helping them manage potential expenses.

This scenario occurred at the start of January, with benefits paid on December 31 instead of January 1 due to New Year’s Day being a federal holiday. It will happen again in the next two months when SSI benefits are disbursed.

February’s SSI benefits will be paid to recipients on Friday, January 30, because February 1 falls on a Sunday this year. These benefit payments are not expected to be affected if Congress fails to reach a funding agreement to avoid a government shutdown beginning Saturday morning.

The SSI benefits for March will be disbursed on Friday, February 27, as March 1 is also a Sunday.

SHOULD THE SOCIAL SECURITY COLA BE MEASURED WITH A SENIOR-FOCUSED INFLATION METRIC?

SSI payments are typically made via direct deposit. However, beneficiaries without bank accounts or those preferring a different method can receive funds on Direct Express cards. The SSA has phased out paper checks as of September, following a Trump administration order mandating all federal payments transition to electronic transfers.

According to data from the SSA, as of September, over 68 million Americans were receiving Social Security benefits. Of that number, approximately 390,000, or about 0.6%, were still receiving paper checks.

The SSA website provides methods for beneficiaries to enroll in direct deposit through the My Social Security platform or by phone via the SSA or the Treasury Department’s electronic payment solution center.
