Ex-County Worker Admits Guilt in Labor Union Embezzlement Case

A former employee of Barnstable County in Massachusetts has pleaded guilty to embezzling funds from a labor union. Kenneth Mattoon, who resides in West Yarmouth, admitted to the crime in federal court in Boston, where he confessed to stealing a total of $21,155 from the Barnstable Massachusetts Department of Public Works Employees Local Number 3003, affiliated with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO.

Mattoon, who held an officer position within the labor union at the time of the embezzlement, committed these acts over a period spanning from May 2020 to May 2025. Prosecutors have indicated that the stolen amount is subject to forfeiture, highlighting the seriousness of the offense.

U.S. District Court Chief Judge Denise J. Casper has set the sentencing date for April 15, 2026. The charge of embezzlement from a labor union carries significant penalties, including a potential prison sentence of up to five years. In addition to incarceration, Mattoon may face three years of supervised release and a hefty fine of $250,000.
