French Postal Service Cyberattack Causes Mail Delivery Delays

A suspected cyberattack has disrupted services provided by the French postal service, La Poste, leading to delays in package deliveries and online payment systems during the busy holiday season.

According to a statement from the company, a “major network incident” has affected its information systems. This disruption includes services operated by its online banking division, La Banque Postale, as well as the laposte.fr website, which displayed a message indicating that it was currently unavailable. The company also noted that some post offices may experience temporary service interruptions.

A spokesperson for La Poste informed the French news outlet BFMTV that the outage was attributed to a distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS). This type of cyberattack floods websites or servers with excessive traffic, overwhelming them and forcing them offline.

As of now, La Poste has not responded to inquiries from Bloomberg News regarding the incident.

In a press release issued in November, La Poste had projected that it would handle nearly 180 million parcels throughout November and December, coinciding with the peak delivery season.

Historically, mail services have been targets for cybercriminals. In 2023, a criminal group employed ransomware to incapacitate the computers of the UK’s Royal Mail, resulting in significant disruptions to international package deliveries.
