Gas Prices Plummet to $2.79 Across the Country for the Christmas Holiday
President Donald Trump speaks about affordability and gas prices during a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
As Americans embark on their holiday travels to reunite with family and friends, the prospect of lower and more stable gas prices is shaping up to be a welcome early Christmas gift after years of financial strain at the pump.
According to projections from GasBuddy, the national average gas price on Christmas Day is expected to settle around $2.79 per gallon. This marks a significant decrease from last year’s average of $3, translating to savings of over half a billion dollars for drivers during the holiday week.
This anticipated price for 2025 aligns closely with gas prices prior to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which had a profound impact on energy markets.

“Provided there are no surprises, holiday travelers should see pump prices that come in a bit lower than last Christmas,” stated Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. He also noted, “We’re seeing encouraging early trends as we prepare to release our 2026 Fuel Outlook in January, with signs that lower prices could continue into next year.”
In a related forecast, AAA anticipates that nearly 122.4 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home during the holidays, an increase of 2.7 million compared to last year.

Approximately 109.5 million Americans are expected to embark on year-end road trips, reflecting a 2% increase from 2024. This trend highlights that affordability and convenience remain the driving factors for nearly 90% of holiday travelers.
This positive outlook coincides with the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to promote energy dominance, a crucial aspect of President Donald Trump’s economic and national security strategy.
