Haywood Talcove Reveals Federal Government’s $1 Trillion Annual Fraud Loss

The staggering amount of fraud affecting the federal government is estimated at around $1 trillion annually. This alarming figure was presented by Haywood Talcove, CEO of LexisNexis Special Services & LexisNexis Risk Solutions Government, during a recent congressional hearing.

This $1 trillion estimate significantly surpasses the numbers reported by the Government Accountability Office (GAO). According to the GAO, the federal government loses between $233 billion and $521 billion each year due to fraud, based on data collected from fiscal years 2018 through 2022.

During the Senate hearing, Talcove stated that he estimates the loss to be “closer to $1 trillion dollars annually, or $115 million every single hour,” with 70% of this fraud linked to transnational criminal organizations.

He expressed surprise that many people are unaware of how easily funds can be siphoned from government resources, adding that taxpayers should be more outraged by this situation.

Talcove’s estimate is grounded in the GAO’s highest figure of $521 billion. He noted, “What the GAO number didn’t include is seven other agencies, including Health and Human Services, which I think is where the greatest amount of fraud is.”

While he acknowledges that the $1 trillion figure is an estimate, he believes it is “directionally correct.”

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently “released the Medicaid data,” which Talcove noted had never been made public before. He suspects that the $1 trillion estimate he provided to Congress may actually be conservative.
