Italy Faces Crisis as Storm Damage Exceeds €1.5 Billion

Italy’s government has declared a state of emergency, unlocking €100 million in funds to assist with repairs following a severe sea storm that impacted the southern regions of the country.

Sicily bore the brunt of the storm, with regional Governor Renato Schifani estimating damages exceeding €1.5 billion ($1.8 billion), according to Ansa newswire. The storm, referred to as Cyclone Harry, significantly affected Sicily’s tourism and hotel industries, particularly in the resort town of Taormina.

The assessed losses in Sicily are expected to continue rising as more damages are reported, according to Ansa.

Italy’s Civil Protection Minister, Nello Musumeci, indicated that the emergency funds will be allocated for an initial response to the crisis. Cyclone Harry unleashed storm surges across southern Italy last week, with high winds and flooding along Sicily’s Ionian coast causing significant damage to waterfronts and infrastructure.

Giant waves, torrential rain, and prolonged rough seas impacted parts of Sicily, Calabria, and Sardinia, leading to the destruction of entire promenades in several coastal towns.
