MAPFRE Re Secures Regulatory Green Light for New Branch Office in India

MAPFRE Re has recently announced that it has received regulatory approval from the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) of India to establish a new branch office in Gujarat. This marks a significant step in the reinsurer’s ongoing commitment to the Indian insurance market.
With a relationship spanning over a decade, MAPFRE Re has progressively enhanced its presence in India, developing a robust business portfolio and collaborating closely with leading insurance companies across the country. This new branch opening aligns perfectly with the current growth phase of the Indian insurance market, which is fueled by the nation’s economic dynamism, an increasing demand for protection solutions, and a favorable regulatory landscape. As a result, India has emerged as one of the most attractive insurance markets on the global stage.
The establishment of the Gujarat branch is a pivotal milestone in MAPFRE Re’s strategic development in Asia. According to the company, this new office will bolster its operational capacity, allowing for a more agile, specialized, and personalized service to clients in the domestic market. Miguel Rosa, CEO of MAPFRE Re, emphasized the importance of this move, stating, “The authorization to operate in India means we’ll be even closer to our clients and that we’ll also be able to leverage our technical knowledge and underwriting capacity in a market with high development potential.”
Javier Sánchez Cea, the APAC regional manager at MAPFRE Re, added, “The opening of the branch in India decisively strengthens our commitment to this strategic market and complements the opening of our branch in China in 2024.” He further noted that this initiative aligns with the company’s broader strategy to expand its direct presence in key countries across the continent, including the Philippines, Japan, Malaysia, and Singapore. Together, these locations form a fundamental pillar for MAPFRE Re’s growth in Asia in the coming years.
Following the receipt of this authorization, MAPFRE Re will proceed with the necessary pre-opening procedures in collaboration with local administrations, adhering to current local regulations. The company aims to commence its operations in India in the coming weeks.
MAPFRE Re is a global reinsurer and the reinsurance unit of the MAPFRE Group, boasting 19 offices worldwide and conducting business in over 100 countries. The company provides a wide range of reinsurance services and capacity, offering various treaty and facultative reinsurance solutions across all non-life and life branches.
