Maryland Sees 18% Drop in Traffic Fatalities for 2025
In 2025, the state of Maryland achieved significant progress in enhancing road safety, with preliminary data indicating an approximate 18% reduction in traffic fatalities statewide. This marks a pivotal moment in the state’s ongoing efforts to protect its residents on the roads.
Motor vehicle crash deaths saw a notable decline, dropping from 582 in 2024 to 480 in 2025. This reduction is particularly significant as it represents the first time in over a decade that fatalities have fallen below the 500 mark, a milestone last reached in 2014.
The most substantial improvements were observed among vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and bicyclists. Fatalities in these categories plummeted by 33%, decreasing from 173 in 2024 to just 116 in 2025. Additionally, motorcyclist fatalities experienced a dramatic 46% decline, falling from 90 to 48 during the same timeframe.
Governor Wes Moore emphasized the importance of road safety, stating, “There is no greater priority than protecting our people. This requires strengthening enforcement, investing in infrastructure, and ensuring our streets are safer for everyone who uses them. The decline we’re seeing in motor vehicle fatalities shows that when we act with urgency and data-driven strategies, we can save lives—and we will not let up because every Marylander should be able to move safely through our communities.”
The Moore Administration attributes this positive trend to increased investments in education, enforcement, and engineering, complemented by enhanced federal and state highway safety funding. These efforts reflect targeted investments in high-risk corridors and a concentrated focus on mitigating behaviors that are most likely to lead to serious crashes.
Key initiatives have included strengthening enforcement against impaired and aggressive driving, expanding automated speed enforcement, launching campaigns to increase seat belt usage, and supporting community-based safety programs. These comprehensive strategies are designed to create a safer environment for all road users.
