Meet the Sexpert: Joan Price

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, we had the pleasure of speaking with Senior Planet’s own ageless sexuality and relationship expert, Joan Price! A contributor to seniorplanet.org since May 2014, Joan’s column “Ask Joan” remains one of our most popular features. We caught up with her to discuss common misconceptions about sex after 50 and the exciting new edition of her book, Naked at Our Age: Talking Out Loud about Senior Sex.

What are your favorite parts of writing “Ask Joan” for seniorplanet.org?

Writing for Senior Planet is an honor, as I am entrusted with readers’ most intimate questions about sex and relationships. When crafting my responses, I keep in mind not just the individual who wrote in, but also the many others who may share similar concerns. My goal is to provide answers that resonate with a wider audience, helping those who seek guidance.

There are numerous misconceptions surrounding ageless sexuality. Many people fail to realize that with the right information, they can enjoy fulfilling sexual experiences throughout their lives. While sex may evolve with age, it can still be satisfying, spicy, and intimate. My mission is to present this information in a clear and inviting manner, empowering individuals to embrace their sexuality.

Has anything surprised you when answering older adults’ questions about romance and sex?

I am frequently surprised! While I often receive questions I’ve answered before, the unique backstories and perspectives make each inquiry distinct. Although I rarely encounter a question that completely stuns me, when it does happen, I welcome the challenge.

If you could dispel one false assumption about sex after 50, what would it be?

One major misconception is that sex is not over when faced with challenges like medical issues, relationship difficulties, or changes in our bodies. With the right information, exploration, and self-acceptance—along with a sense of humor—we can discover solutions that lead to renewed sexual pleasure and intimacy.

Tell us about the re-release of your book, Naked at Our Age: Talking Out Loud about Senior Sex!

Naked at Our Age: Talking Out Loud about Senior Sex features real people aged 50 and above sharing their stories and questions about sex. Experts provide advice, complemented by my commentary. The first edition, released in 2011, won two prestigious awards in 2012: Outstanding Self-Help Book from the American Society of Journalists and Authors and a Book Award from the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists. Since then, it has continued to receive acclaim from both media and readers.

In January 2026, to mark the book’s fifteenth anniversary, Naked at Our Age was released in a new edition. It retains the classic content of the original while adding two new chapters filled with updates and expert tips. (Click here to read more about the new edition.)

You can purchase it from your local bookseller or preferred online retailer—but be sure to ask for the 2026 edition. For an autographed copy in the US, order directly from me at this link!

Senior Planet’s motto is “Aging with Attitude.” What does that mean to you?

To me, “Aging with Attitude” signifies a creative approach to aging, where we continually reinvent ourselves at every stage of life, especially as seniors. It’s about rejecting stereotypes and societal expectations regarding how we should behave or think—whether it’s about our fashion choices or our relationship styles. It encourages us to keep learning and trying new things. If not now, when? At age 82, I embrace this philosophy with pride and enthusiasm!
