New Jersey Unveils Additional $16 Million for Medical Debt Relief

In a significant move for healthcare affordability, outgoing Governor Phil Murphy announced the seventh round of medical debt relief in New Jersey. Nearly 14,000 residents will benefit from the cancellation of almost $16 million in medical bills, marking a substantial step towards alleviating financial burdens caused by healthcare costs.

This relief initiative is made possible through a collaboration with the national nonprofit organization Undue Medical Debt (Undue). Utilizing approximately $165,000 in American Rescue Plan funds, Undue has strategically purchased this medical debt from the secondary market, allowing for its cancellation.

Since the program’s inception in 2023, which began with a $10 million grant in fiscal year 2024, the partnership has successfully eliminated nearly $1.5 billion in medical debt for over 847,500 New Jersey residents. This remarkable achievement underscores the state’s commitment to ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder access to necessary medical care.

“Medical debt should never stand between New Jersey residents and the care they need,” stated Governor Murphy, emphasizing the importance of this initiative in promoting health equity.

Individuals who qualify for this relief will receive a notification letter from Undue in the coming weeks, providing them with details about the cancellation of their medical debt. Importantly, there is no application process required for this relief. Undue operates by purchasing large, bundled portfolios of past-due medical debt from providers, such as hospitals, and collection agencies. Instead of pursuing collections, Undue takes the compassionate route of erasing the debt entirely.

Eligibility for medical debt relief is straightforward. Individuals must either be at or below 400% of the federal poverty line or have medical debts that amount to 5% or more of their annual income. These criteria ensure that assistance is directed to those who need it most.

It is crucial to note that medical debt relief cannot be actively requested by individuals. Instead, it relies on healthcare providers and secondary market partners to engage in the sale of qualifying medical debt. This unique approach allows for a more streamlined process in addressing the financial challenges faced by many residents.
