Nexus Buys Medical Tourism MGA Sure Insurance Services
Nexus Underwriting, a London-based Managing General Agent (MGA) and a subsidiary of Brown & Brown, has announced its acquisition of Sure Insurance Services, a prominent provider of specialized solutions for the medical tourism sector.
This acquisition has received the necessary regulatory approval, although the financial details remain undisclosed.
Founded in 2003 by Alison Thornberry, Sure has established itself as the leading MGA for medical travel insurance programs. Its offerings cater to a rapidly expanding medical tourism market across the UK, Australia, and South Africa.
Post-acquisition, Sure will integrate into Millstream Underwriting, a company owned by Nexus since 2015. Thornberry and her team will continue their roles under the leadership of Millstream’s managing director, Rob Amati.
Nexus emphasized that this acquisition aligns with its strategy of pursuing niche and specialist MGAs that complement its bespoke approach. The company consistently seeks firms that provide analytical expertise, share cultural values, and align financially with its growth objectives.
“We are very pleased to welcome Alison and the Sure team into Millstream and the wider Nexus family,” stated Amati. “Sure is a highly respected specialist MGA with a strong track record in medical travel insurance, which will support our mission to deliver quality underwriting and claims services to our brokers and policyholders, as well as long-term profitable results for our capacity providers.”
Thornberry expressed her pride in Sure’s achievements over the past two decades, stating, “Joining Nexus will allow us to enhance our specialist medical travel and revisions offering, support our partners, and drive our growth, while maintaining the same team, knowledge, and service our customers rely on.”
This acquisition follows the launch of Arrowhead Intermediaries, Nexus’ parent brand. Steve Boyd, CEO of Arrowhead Intermediaries, remarked, “We’re thrilled to welcome Sure Insurance Services to our diverse platform for the global insurance marketplace.”
Nexus Underwriting, part of Arrowhead Intermediaries, is a leading specialty MGA focusing on niche insurance classes. Established in 2008, it has grown into a global entity with a Gross Written Premium (GWP) of $550 million and employs over 300 individuals across three continents. The Arrowhead Intermediaries brand was launched in August 2025 to unify Brown & Brown’s wholesale, program, and specialty operations.
