Pizza Hut Shuts Down Low-Performing Locations
‘Bar Rescue’ host Jon Taffer joins ‘Varney & Co.’ to discuss how weight loss drugs, inflation, and rising costs are reshaping America’s restaurant industry.
Pizza Hut is set to close approximately 250 locations across the U.S. by June. This decision comes as its parent company, Yum! Brands, aims to shut down underperforming stores and reassess the brand’s long-term strategy, according to company executives.
During an earnings call, Yum! Brands’ Chief Financial Officer Ranjith Roy indicated that the closures will primarily focus on weaker-performing Pizza Hut restaurants. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize the chain and enhance its overall performance.
The closures are linked to the company’s “Hut Forward” initiative, which aims to refresh Pizza Hut’s marketing, update its restaurant model, and improve franchise performance. Yum! Brands has also stated that it is reviewing broader strategic options for Pizza Hut, suggesting that these changes could signal a more significant reset for the brand.

BAHAMA BREEZE TO CLOSE ALL ITS RESTAURANTS
These closures come as Pizza Hut faces challenges in the U.S. market, even while other Yum! Brands chains like Taco Bell and KFC report strong growth and expansion. Pizza Hut’s domestic same-store sales have declined, contrasting sharply with the positive performance of its sister brands.
Despite the closures in the U.S., Yum! Brands has noted that Pizza Hut is still experiencing growth internationally. The chain opened over 440 new locations globally in the fourth quarter and nearly 1,200 restaurants in 2025 across 65 countries.

Yum! Brands has indicated that these closures will mainly occur in the first half of the year, temporarily reducing Pizza Hut’s global store count before growth is expected to resume later in 2026.

“To help set expectations on key Pizza Hut business metrics for 2026, from a unit standpoint, we expect strong gross openings globally, which are seasonally weighted toward the back half of the year,” Roy stated.

These strategic moves come as Yum! Brands reported robust earnings and increased its dividend, highlighting that the closures at Pizza Hut reflect brand-specific challenges rather than a broader weakness within the company.
