Salmonella Outbreak: Recall of Super Greens Diet Supplement Powder After 45 Infections

At least 45 individuals across more than 20 states have reported infections of salmonella food poisoning linked to the Super Greens brand of dietary supplement powder, as confirmed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Superfoods Inc., the manufacturer of the Live it Up-brand Super Greens powder, issued a voluntary recall on Wednesday following FDA recommendations. The recall affects both the original and wild berry flavors of the product, with expiration dates ranging from August 2026 to January 2028.

Consumers are strongly advised not to consume the product and to either dispose of it or return it to the point of purchase.

The CDC has reported that 45 individuals across 21 states have been infected with salmonella linked to this recall, resulting in 12 hospitalizations. The illnesses associated with the supplement were documented between August 22 and December 30.

The states reporting cases include Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported in connection with this product.

This dietary supplement was sold nationwide, primarily through the Live it Up company website and other online platforms such as Amazon, eBay, and Walmart.

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning typically manifest within hours or days after consuming contaminated food. Common symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. While most individuals recover without medical intervention within a week, the infection can be severe for young children, elderly adults, and those with compromised immune systems.

The FDA is currently conducting a “traceback investigation” to identify the products consumed by those who fell ill and is collaborating with state partners to sample products of concern.

Additional products may also be contaminated, according to the agency.
