Virginia Democrat Supports Legislation to Prevent Oversight of Nonprofits Funded by Federal Dollars

A Democratic Virginia lawmaker is advocating for a controversial bill that would prevent the state from verifying a nonprofit’s eligibility to provide and receive federal taxpayer benefits. This proposal comes amid increasing scrutiny regarding the misuse of taxpayer funds.

The introduction of House Bill 1369, spearheaded by Virginia Democratic state Del. Jessica Anderson, follows a significant fraud scandal involving nonprofits in Minnesota. The Trump administration has been pressuring states to enhance oversight on how taxpayer money is allocated.

The bill states, “No state agency responsible for the administration of federal funds shall impose a requirement on a nonprofit charitable organization providing a federal public benefit to determine, verify, or otherwise require proof of eligibility of any applicant for such benefits.”

The scrutiny over taxpayer funds allocated to nonprofits has intensified following a burgeoning fraud scandal in Minnesota, where billions of dollars were reportedly lost due to fraudulent activities linked to the state’s Somali community.

In December, the Justice Department announced that at least 78 individuals had been charged in the “Feeding Our Future” scandal, named after the Somali-linked nonprofit accused of defrauding the coffers of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Washington.

By that time, nearly 40 individuals had already pleaded guilty. The defendants were accused of fabricating invoices, attendance records, and meal distributions in low-income areas across Minnesota.

In response to the scandal, the Trump administration dispatched federal authorities to crack down on fraudulent activities in Minnesota. Alongside Anderson’s bill, newly sworn-in Democratic Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger has introduced a range of progressive policies that have faced significant criticism from Republicans. These include the repeal of an executive order by her predecessor that prohibited local and state law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities.

Additionally, Spanberger has reduced mandatory minimum sentences for various crimes and prioritized Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives in government contracting, alongside raising taxes.
