Another intense winter storm system is sweeping from the upper Midwest to the Northeast, posing significant challenges for US airlines during the bustling holiday travel season.

Airlines are still grappling with the aftermath of recent disruptions that resulted in over 3,600 flight cancellations between December 26 and December 28. In addition, more than 30,000 flights either failed to depart or arrive on schedule during this period, according to data from FlightAware.

As of 10:00 a.m. New York time on Monday, over 500 US flights have been canceled, with an additional 2,000-plus experiencing delays.

Since Friday, Delta Air Lines Inc. has been identified as the most disrupted airline globally, according to FlightAware rankings. These operational hiccups occur during a record-breaking period for air travel in the US, with an average of 2.9 million passengers flying daily between December 19 and January 5.

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service have issued warnings about a “potent” winter storm, expected to reach its peak intensity on Monday morning. This storm will affect areas from the upper Midwest to the Great Lakes, bringing freezing rain to New England.
