CPSC Issues Recall for Above-Ground Pools Due to Significant Drowning Risk for Children

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall for over 13,000 above-ground pools due to a significant “drowning hazard.” This recall, announced on December 18, affects approximately 13,400 Blue Wave pools and 80 pools from the SerenLife Home brand, all of which are 48 inches tall or higher.

The CPSC identified a critical design flaw in both pool models. Specifically, the compression strap that encircles the exterior of the pools can inadvertently serve as a foothold. This design allows children to climb into the pool even in the absence of a ladder, thereby increasing the risk of unsupervised access to the water.

“The recalled above-ground pools contain a compression strap (also known as a reinforcing belt) that wraps around the pool on the outside of the vertical support poles, potentially creating a foothold that allows a child to access the pool and drown,” the recall notice stated.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in connection with the recalled products. However, Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman emphasized that such design flaws in above-ground pools have led to “a mounting death toll” over the years. He stated, “Today’s recall of nearly 13,500 additional Chinese-made above-ground pools addresses a dangerous design flaw that has resulted in at least nine deaths over the past 15 years.”

Feldman criticized previous CPSC leadership for not taking this hazard seriously, despite clear evidence of the dangers associated with these pools. “No longer. Under new leadership, CPSC is committed to addressing the number one killer of children: drowning,” he added. This action follows a significant recall of above-ground pools in July 2025 and the recent introduction of a new safety standard for infant neck floats. Protecting children from serious product hazards remains a top priority for the CPSC.

Families are urged not to wait until swimming season to address this issue. Feldman advised, “Families should stop using these pools immediately.”
