FDA Expands Cheese Recall Due to Listeria Contamination Risk

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a significant update regarding a recall of cheese products. This recall has been elevated to the most serious risk category after testing revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a potentially deadly bacteria.

The Ambriola Company initially issued a voluntary recall in November for specific cheese products manufactured at its facility in West Caldwell, New Jersey. This action followed routine testing that confirmed the bacteria’s presence, which poses severe health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, the elderly, young children, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

The FDA highlighted that while healthy individuals may experience only mild, short-term symptoms—such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea—Listeria infections can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.

On Tuesday, the FDA reclassified the recall as Class I, indicating a “reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, [the] product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” This classification underscores the urgency of the situation.

The recall affects eight products, with half sold directly to consumers and the other half sold by the pound for large-scale cooking. These products were distributed to retail stores and distributors nationwide between November 3 and November 20.

The specific products included in the recall are:
