Oil and Gas Permits Surge 55% Amid Trump’s ‘Drill, Baby, Drill’ Energy Policy
U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum joins ‘Mornings with Maria’ to discuss President Donald Trump’s energy dominance agenda, surging drilling permits, falling inflation, and rising national security stakes at home and abroad.
Recent data from the Interior Department reveals a significant increase in oil and gas drilling permits approved on public lands, showing a rise of approximately 55% since President Donald Trump returned to the White House in January. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum attributes this surge to lower domestic energy costs and enhanced U.S. energy competitiveness on the global stage.
Burgum stated, “President Trump promised to ‘drill, baby, drill,’ and his policy of increasing an abundant supply of energy, creating energy dominance for America, is bringing home the goals of dropping inflation and bringing prosperity to Americans and bringing peace abroad.” This statement was made during his appearance on “Mornings with Maria.”
According to the Bureau of Land Management, the Interior Department approved 5,742 permits for drilling on public lands over the past year. This figure marks a substantial increase compared to the same timeframe under the previous administration.

Burgum emphasized that the administration’s energy dominance agenda has far-reaching implications, from reducing everyday costs for American families—covering essentials like food, clothing, and gas—to bolstering U.S. leverage on the global stage. “President Trump [is] breaking the back of inflation,” he remarked.
He further noted, “Being energy-abundant has allowed us to take actions, whether it’s eliminating Iran’s nuclear capability or arresting Maduro; all of those things are possible because of President Trump’s energy abundance, energy dominance agenda.”
