Trump Weighs Tariffs Against Opponents of Greenland Acquisition Strategy

President Donald Trump stated on Friday that he is considering the imposition of new tariffs on countries that do not support his ambitions for the U.S. to acquire Greenland.

“I may put a tariff on countries if they don’t go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security,” Trump remarked during an event at the White House.

In recent weeks, Trump has focused on Greenland, the world’s largest island, which holds strategic significance in the Arctic. This semi-autonomous territory of Denmark is home to a vital U.S. military base and has gained importance as melting ice opens new shipping routes and access to abundant natural resources.

Trump’s comments come as his administration awaits a Supreme Court ruling regarding the legality of certain tariffs imposed in 2024 that have been challenged.

Trump initially proposed the idea of acquiring Greenland during his previous term, a suggestion that faced significant backlash from Denmark and was dismissed by European leaders. This skepticism has resurfaced with Trump’s renewed focus on the territory.

His recent statements have raised alarms among Denmark and other NATO allies, leading to the deployment of troops from several European nations, including France, Germany, Sweden, and Norway, to Greenland for enhanced security measures.

Public opinion appears divided on this issue. A recent Quinnipiac University poll revealed that 86% of voters nationwide would oppose military action aimed at taking over Greenland. Additionally, the survey indicated that voters are against any U.S. effort to purchase Greenland by a margin of 55% to 37%. These findings suggest that the proposal has not garnered widespread support among American voters.
