OpenAI announced on Friday its plans to introduce advertisements in ChatGPT for select U.S. users. This move is part of the company’s strategy to boost revenue ahead of a highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO).
The rollout will begin in the coming weeks, targeting users on the free and lower-priced Go tiers. Notably, those subscribed to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers will not see ads.
According to OpenAI, the ads will appear at the bottom of ChatGPT answers when relevant sponsored products or services align with the user’s current conversation. This approach aims to integrate advertising seamlessly into the user experience.

OpenAI emphasized that the ads will be “clearly labeled” and distinct from ChatGPT’s responses. Users will have the option to understand why they are seeing specific ads and can dismiss them if desired.
Importantly, ads will not be displayed to users under 18, nor will they appear alongside sensitive topics such as health, mental health, or politics. OpenAI reassured users that advertisements will not affect the responses generated by ChatGPT, and conversations will remain private from advertisers.
“We never sell your data to advertisers,” the company stated, adding that users can disable the personalization feature. “We’ll always offer a way to avoid ads in ChatGPT, including a paid tier that’s ad-free.”

OpenAI has primarily depended on subscriptions for its revenue, but the introduction of ads could yield substantial income given ChatGPT’s estimated 800 million weekly active users. The company has plans to invest over $1 trillion in artificial intelligence infrastructure by 2030, though it has not disclosed how it will finance these costs, according to Reuters.
Analyst Jeremy Goldman from Emarketer noted that users might consider switching to competing chatbots, suggesting that OpenAI’s decision could prompt rivals to clarify their own monetization strategies, especially those that market themselves as “ad-free by design.”
In its statement, OpenAI expressed its commitment to learning from user feedback and refining its advertising approach, ensuring that its “commitment to putting users first and maintaining trust won’t change.”

“Our long-term focus remains on building products that millions of people and businesses find valuable enough to pay for,” the company stated. “Our enterprise and subscription businesses are already strong, and we believe in having a diverse revenue model where ads can play a part in making intelligence more accessible to everyone.”
