Top Dairy Brands Issue Baby Formula Recall Over Cereulide Contamination Concerns

Three of the world’s largest dairy companies are recalling and blocking batches of infant milk formula due to potential contamination with cereulide, a toxin that can lead to nausea and vomiting.

The contamination issue began with Nestle and has now expanded to include French companies Danone and Lactalis as of Wednesday.

Earlier this month, Nestle initiated a recall of infant nutrition products across numerous countries due to concerns over cereulide contamination.

A judicial inquiry in France is currently investigating a possible link between Nestle’s milk and the tragic death of a baby. The farm ministry has indicated that results from this inquiry are expected within the next ten days.

Last week, the Singapore Food Agency took precautionary measures by recalling a batch of Danone’s Thai-origin Dumex Dulac 1 and Nestle’s Swiss-origin NAN HA1 SupremePro after detecting cereulide.

Lactalis announced on Wednesday that its nutrition unit is recalling batches of baby milk in 18 countries due to the presence of cereulide in an ingredient sourced from a supplier.

“All infant milk producers in France and internationally are likely to have been affected by deliveries of non-compliant raw materials from the same manufacturer, which led to recalls by Nestle and Lactalis,” stated a French farm ministry official to Reuters.

The contaminated arachidonic acid (ARA) was sourced from a Dutch supplier, according to Lactalis. However, the company clarified that it was not the Amsterdam-listed producer dsm-firmenich, which has confirmed that none of its products were involved in the Nestle recall.

While the ARA was sold by a Dutch company, it originated from a producer in China, as per the French farm ministry official, who opted not to disclose any company names.

Nestle has also identified quality concerns at one of its factories in the Netherlands and has suspended sourcing ARA oil from the implicated supplier.
