Nvidia CEO: Construction Worker Salaries Rise with Enhanced Infrastructure Development

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently highlighted the significant impact of the artificial intelligence (AI) technology boom on the job market, particularly for construction trade workers. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Huang addressed the rising salaries of those involved in building the infrastructure necessary to support AI advancements.

During a discussion with BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, who serves as the WEF interim co-chair, Huang emphasized the scale of this infrastructure build-out. “First of all, this is the largest infrastructure build-out in human history. That’s going to create a lot of jobs,” he stated. He noted that these jobs span various trades, including plumbing, electrical work, construction, steelworking, and network installation.

Huang pointed out that the demand for skilled labor in these areas is soaring, with salaries nearly doubling for workers engaged in constructing chip factories, computer facilities, and AI centers. “We’re seeing quite a significant boom in this area. Salaries have gone up nearly double, and so we’re talking about six-figure salaries for people who are building chip factories or computer factories or AI factories,” he remarked.

Huang expressed his enthusiasm for the growing recognition of the importance of skilled trades in this evolving landscape. “We have a great shortage in that, and I’m really delighted to see so many people in so many countries recognizing this important area,” he said. He emphasized that individuals do not need advanced degrees to secure well-paying jobs in this field.

During his conversation with Fink, Huang elaborated on the various layers of AI infrastructure and their interdependence. “When you think about AI, you think about the AI models, but it’s really important to understand that industrially, AI is actually essentially a five-layer cake,” he explained. The foundational layer is energy, which is crucial for real-time processing and intelligence generation.

According to Huang, the layers above energy include chips and cloud services, followed by AI models and the application layer, where AI is utilized to generate economic benefits.

Huang concluded by emphasizing the unprecedented scale of this infrastructure build-out, stating, “The important thing, though, because this computing platform requires all of the layers underneath it, it has started – and everybody is seeing it right now – it has started the largest infrastructure build-out in human history.” He projected that the rise of AI will necessitate “trillions of dollars of infrastructure that needs to be built out,” underscoring the importance of these investments for the future of AI applications.
