French Authorities Conduct Raid on Elon Musk’s X Offices in Paris Over Algorithm Inquiry

In a significant development, French police conducted a raid on X’s offices in Paris on Tuesday. This action is part of an ongoing investigation into the company’s use of algorithms and its artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok.
The raid was executed by the Paris public prosecutor’s cybercrime unit. Following the search, both Elon Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino were summoned to provide evidence on April 20, as reported by Reuters.
The investigation was initiated in 2025 after a complaint from a lawmaker claimed that biased algorithms on the platform may have distorted the functioning of an automated data processing system.
Prosecutors are now scrutinizing potential algorithm abuse and fraudulent data extraction by X or its executives, raising serious concerns about the platform’s operational integrity.

The scope of the investigation has expanded to include Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Musk’s company xAI and integrated into the platform, according to Reuters.
In a related move, Britain’s privacy watchdog, the Information Commissioner’s Office, announced on Tuesday that it had launched a formal investigation into Grok. This inquiry focuses on the processing of personal data and allegations that the chatbot was used to generate nonconsensual sexual imagery, including that of children.
X has criticized the actions of the French authorities, claiming that prosecutors have bypassed international legal mechanisms.

In a statement on X, the company asserted that the Paris Public Prosecutor’s office is “plainly attempting to exert pressure on X’s senior management in the United States by targeting our French entity and employees, who are not the focus of this investigation.”
X further claimed that prosecutors had ignored established procedures to obtain evidence “in compliance with international treaties” and the company’s right to defend itself.
In response to the raid, Musk stated on X: “This is a political attack.”

In a separate statement, Europol confirmed its support for the French investigation, collaborating with the French Gendarmerie’s cybercrime unit.
The investigation encompasses a variety of suspected criminal offenses related to the platform’s functionality and use, including the dissemination of illegal content and other forms of online criminal activity. Europol stands ready to assist French authorities as the investigation unfolds.
