The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has escalated a nationwide recall of cake and bread mixes to a Class I designation, the most serious warning level. This classification is issued when a product poses a significant risk of severe illness or even death.
Initially announced in December, the recall affects 866 bags of mixes distributed by Dallas-based B.C. Williams Bakery Service. The affected products include:
- 51 bags of Spice Cake Mix
- 720 bags of Bread and Roll Mix
- 95 bags of Swiss Chocolate Cake Mix
According to the FDA, these mixes may contain an undeclared milk allergen, which poses a serious risk for individuals with milk allergies. As reported by local outlet WHNT, exposure could lead to life-threatening reactions.
A Class I recall indicates a “situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death,” as defined by the FDA’s guidelines.

Milk allergies are among the most prevalent food allergies in children, with symptoms ranging from vomiting and hives to anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening reaction, as noted by the Mayo Clinic.
The recalled products were packaged in 50-pound bags, and it remains unclear where they were distributed or if any injuries have been reported.

This recall is part of a broader trend of food safety alerts emerging nationwide. Recently, thousands of popular products, including Diet Coke and Pringles, have been removed from shelves due to rodent and bird contamination found at a Midwest distribution center.
Additionally, consumers are cautioned to avoid specific cans of Genova Yellowfin Tuna that were mistakenly shipped to stores across nine states, despite being recalled last year.
