Boring Company Chosen for Underground Transit Project at Universal Orlando

Elon Musk’s The Boring Company has been chosen to initiate negotiations for a proposed underground transit system that aims to connect Universal Orlando’s parks. This decision follows a vote by the Shingle Creek Transit and Utility Community Development District Board.

During its meeting on February 11, the board authorized staff to enter into contract negotiations with The Boring Company after determining that its proposal best aligned with the district’s request for an “innovative, future-ready, point-to-point solution.”

The project is designed to enhance transportation infrastructure, particularly in relation to the planned Sunshine Corridor and the transit needs associated with the expansion around Universal Orlando.

It’s important to note that this decision does not finalize a contract.

Any agreement reached will still require board approval. Officials have stated that they will assess the project’s operational and financial feasibility before proceeding.

Fox 35 Orlando reported that the proposed underground transit system aims to alleviate congestion along International Drive by connecting Universal’s existing theme parks and CityWalk with the recently opened Epic Universe.

The board’s vote follows months of speculation and a competitive selection process that included proposals from other companies, such as Glydways.

While some competitors proposed elevated guideway systems aimed at reducing construction time, the district ultimately favored an underground concept akin to The Boring Company’s “Vegas Loop” in Nevada.

“I think it would be a new opportunity to lessen traffic load and good for visitors as well,” said resident Scott Heinz, according to Fox 35.

Another resident, Mary Walters-Clark, expressed optimism about the project, stating it could help alleviate congestion during peak hours by providing visitors with an alternative to navigating heavy traffic, thereby allowing them to manage their time more effectively.
