“Absolute madness,” Paul exclaimed as the auction unfolded, sharing his excitement in a video on Instagram. He originally purchased the card a few years back, marking it as the “most expensive Pokémon trading card sold at a private sale,” according to Guinness World Records. Paul even showcased the card during his entrance at WrestleMania 38, highlighting his transition into the world of professional wrestling.

Goldin Auctions Co. managed the auction for Paul’s prized card, describing it as an “unimaginable Holy Grail piece.”

The Pokémon craze began in November 1997 when CoroCoro Comic launched the “Pokémon Card Game Illust Artist Contest.” Participants were invited to create their own Pokémon card illustrations, with winners receiving 20 cards featuring their designs. Additionally, 20 contestants received an “Excellence Award,” which included a copy of the Pikachu Illustrator Card.

According to Goldin’s description, “the current hobby consensus is that 41 copies of this card were officially awarded and distributed, with this Logan Paul-backed piece being the most notable.” The card comes with a custom wooden presentation box featuring Paul’s Maverick logo and a plaque that reads ‘Pokémon / Pikachu Illustrator / PSA 10 / 1 of 1.’

Due to its rarity, immense value, and prestigious history, this Pikachu Illustrator card represents one of the most significant public offerings in Pokémon card history, making it a potentially once-in-a-lifetime sale.

A.J. Scaramucci, son of financier and former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci, is the new owner of this remarkable card.

“Goodbye my friend,” Paul expressed on Instagram before the auction commenced. “What a privilege it’s been to be the owner of the greatest collectible in the world.”

This card is now recognized as the most expensive trading card globally, surpassing the previous record held by a 1952 Mickey Mantle card, which sold for $12.6 million in 2022.
